MARcon - May 28-30, 2010AD, Columbus Ohio

Post by Omote »

MARCON
www.marcon.org
Who: Marcon (Multiple Alternative Realities Convention)
What: The Midwest's Premiere Fantasy & Science Fiction Convention
When: May 28th - 30th 2010 (Memorial Day Weekend)
Where: Hyatt Regency, Columbus OH
Why: Well, that's the easy part...Just for the fun of it!!

MARcon is a convention for all things fandom related in the beautiful Short North District of downtown Columbus Ohio. The theme of this year's MARcon is NECROPOLIS and will be a celebration of all things Horror. Beside the copious amounts of room parties and free flowing adult beverages, MARcon has filk, a large dealer's room, panels, many costume events (including a Masquerade Ball and a Zombie Walk), videos rooms, and anime events (and lots o' Steampunk). Oh, and don't forget the gaming halls (open gaming, video gaming, scheduled games of all kinds) filled with RPGs, miniatures, card games, board games and more.

Oh yeah, did I mention Castles & Crusades? Yeah, there will be a game or two!

2500+ attendees!

Generally, filking is pretty big at MARcon. Lot of people love it. Check out Ookla the Mok... total rockage.

Not sure if the USS Casual will be doing a big party but they didn't last year which leads me to believe that a Bachanal is in the offing...with kingdoms to save and women to love!

I think the UBS Casual will be teaming up with BarBase Columbus for this year's MARcon. Not sure where I remember hearing that, but I think it's true. The FPQ will not be throwing a big party this year (last year's was all too rediculous, and I think we need a year off from that ~ We didn't know how well the actual herem lounge would actually go over! Whew). But you never know what'll pop up until the actual con.

The requsite other parties will indeed be present. With the increased turnout and generally how well last year's MARcon went, this year should be spectacular. The Steampunk and the Horror theme should make for a very exciting year.

Hmm, a horror-themed con... now, that's a might tempting.

Just a bit of a BUMP.

MARcon is next weekend! If you are into the convention theme, come on down for all the horror and a little bit of steampunk you can handle.

If you are into gaming, come on down and get your 100-tons of Classic BattleTech on or enjoy a game of Castles & Crusades! Of course there are many more gaming events, but the only ones I can vouch for are C&C and Classic BattleTech

I would love to go on down to it, but I've decided to go to Troll Con this year, so I need to pinch pennies so I can make that con. Have fun and kill a few orcs/zombies for me!

Check Rigon... though I will not kill orcs or zombies. I shall send them endlessly after the players! Mwuhahaha!

Plus, for you C&C fans in the area, you can get the chance to play the recently released Harbringer Variant of C&C. Demo-riffic!

MARcon was great. I think this con is back on the uptick for the past few years after a long hard slog through the previous decade. The final #s are not in yet, but I'd say right around 2000 people attended. The theme was Necropolis, but a ton of Steam Punk slipped in. Almost like it was a two-theme con. The Columbus Ohio Zombie-Walk went off SPECTACULARLY! Almost two-thousand people marched through the city and through the convention on Saturday. A sight to behold.

The was lots of good gaming at MARcon this year (been getting better every year, though sign-up had its problems).

Unfortunately nobody signed up for some Castles & Crusades, but we did have some good C&C talk.

The MARcon dealer room was pretty standard fare with about 30 or so dealers (probably a few less then last year). I was extremely happy to finally get a hold of the new Horus Heresy board game for 20% off!

Oh, and the drinking. Oh dear gods in heaven the drinking. While the party scene was pretty low this year comparitively speaking, the good times were still to be had on Big Bar on 2 and through some small, private parties. It's the first time in a long time that I was continually drunk for more than 24 hours straight. That made for a rough Saturday. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank SUBWAY for their new Breakfast sandwiches keeping me alive during the bad, bad mornings. EAT FRESH!

This man is fairly typical folks...more people at the parties than the actual con. Help us out next year.

No sir. Due to the relatively low party count at MARcon this year, this was not at all the case. I would even go so far as to say that I played more games this year than in the previous 2-3 years combined! There was plenty more to do and see at MARcon then just party. Believe that.

I heard that there were a lot of private parties...not the madhouse baccanaals of years past.

I would not say that there were a lot of private parties at MARcon this year, but there were indeed some. One of the private parties was actually quite large.
