Conventions worth attending...

Post by serleran »

So, with convention season approaching, which ones are the ones that are worth attending? I may be able to go to some of these, so consider that in your calculation.

Are you looking for pure game cons, or a mix, or something different?

Mostly for gaming. Some cons are just too large to sit down and enjoy a simple game, or they're just an excuse to sell stuff. I don't want to pay money to listen to walking advertisements; I can do that on TV. But, a mix of gaming and "other stuff" would be nice -- Con on the Cob is that sort of con, I suppose... small but not so small there's nothing else (in case a game falls through.)

Heh, I believe the con season has already begun with a real good one . . GaryCON. Fabulous event.

The Troll CON looks like it's really growing. I'm very much wanting to get down there.

All the guys here talked up the CON on the COB - which you mention. I'd like to get to that one as well.

Hmm, might seem obvious but TrollCon looks to fit the bill. It seems as if this year TLG is pushing for a larger CON audience, so this may work well.

I normally pimp the awesome convention MARCON (Columbus Ohio). This is more of a fandom/party convention, but I would say that the gaming is about the size of Con-on-the-Cob, but not as well organized as CotC. Nothing commericial about MARCON at all.

If you are into anime, OHAYOCON is amazing. Lots to do and see if you are into anime. The gaming is small, but getting bigger. Not well organized though.

Since I convention around the Ohio-Indiana area, that's all I can really say for additional cons.

Think about ConCarolinas in Charlotte, NC, especially if you like Savage Worlds stuff. PEG has a presence there with Clint Black. Sean Patrick Fannon is there, too, with Savage Worlds Shaintar. And some chick name Christina Stiles is a gaming guest. This con has LOTS of gaming, but sci-fi, anime, and other things, as well. It has a writers' track, too. It's not huge like a DragonCon, though. For you guys, Claudia Christian will be there this year.

I would also recommend MACE in High Point, NC. Excellent gaming convention.

I plan on attending those. I'm hoping to make Origins, too, and possibly Troll Con.

one somewhat close to your neck of the woods, Hammercon - in hamilton ontario. this will be its 2nd year, its 100% gaming. about 100 attendees showed up last year, expecting the same this year, if not a bit more.

Cheers,

J.

If I could only go to one con all year, it's obvious from all of my net whoring that my choice would be Con on the Cob. GaryCon was huge amounts of fun, though, so that could very well turn into an annual thing for me as well. Especially if I wind up moving back to Wisconsin.
North Texas RPG Con is in its second year, so it's still pretty small, but the focus there is on gaming: Specifically old school. As far as small cons go, I'd say their guest list is second only to GaryCon if you're into the whole "History of the Game" thing.

I went to GenCon all the time back when I lived in Milwaukee. Hell, I'd dig through the couch for spare change and then take the city bus downtown to attend. Since it moved to Indy and I to San Antonio, it's no longer worth the expense or logistics. At least DragonCon has sluts.

Ding for confirmation. Lots to see and do, but gaming never seems to be a high priority for DragonCon.

Any Con where I attend is a good Con. Except for that ElfQuest Con I went to when I was 15 or 16...you can only do so much with the theme, you know?

At a Con in St. Louis that no longer exists, I talked some local VFW guys to LARP with a local LARP group. It was funny as hell! Most of the vets were Desert Storm era, and boy can they sneak through the woods! I do not think I have ever been so scared before in a combat with foam weaponry!

I have never been much of a LARPer but I think the most fun had that whole day was by the four vets who pretty much cleaned our clocks.
