Can't....stop....

Post by DangerDwarf »

One of my birthday gifts was Final Fantasy XIII. While EXTREMELY linear, it is a blast thus far. I'm sucked in to this game and holy crap it is beautiful.

I wouldn't classify it as an RPG, but I would classify it as a worthy time sink.

I stopped playing Final Fantasy after giving X a try and discovered it was more "movie" than game. I didn't even get more than maybe 3 hours in before deciding it was a waste of time -- yeah, it looked nice, but I buy a game to play a game, not be directed. A shame the franchise has lost its neatness.

I played through XIII in the first few days after it came out (which I have done with every FF game). All in all, it had its fun, but all in all I will say it is the weakest game in the entire series. The combat system, to me, was the only fun in it. The story was stupid and the characters worthless...the ending was literally moronic. The battle system, however, was really, really fun.

They could have had zero plot and the game would have still been fun, if anything the melodrama of the story took away from time that could have been spent fighting.

In my opinion, its not the weakest of the series. There were a few FF's I couldn't stomach enough to even play through more than a few hours. And yeah, the battle system is pretty damn fun.

I always find it funny that "Final" Fantasy has so many sequels. :p

I wouldn't know. I've never played any of them myself, although I am very familiar with VII's story due to watching friends play through it.

It is called "Final" Fantasy because Square was nearly bankrupt when they produced the game and named it thus over its "make or break" position. If it failed, so too would Square.

My only venture into vidiocy was a Sega game, "Toejam and Earl!" I have a son who was ruined with video games. I avoid them and computer games like the plague. I know my limits.

DUDE... toejam and earl was the shizzy! Any game where you high five your buddy to give him a life boost and then run around the planet trying to get back to FUNKOTRON beating up insane ice cream men is bad ass in my book.

Indeed, and the fact that the worlds were somewhat randomized and you always had to listen to that kickass background music. Good stuff, TJ&E.

Though I make it my business to play through most RPG's that come out in the US, I still greatly prefer the 8-bit and 16-bit era of them. Dragon Warrior (Quest) II is my favorite game of all time.

All of the NES and SNES Final Fantasy games are also among my favorites. For all the newer FF games (7-13) they departed from the formula quite a bit, but at their heart (save for 13) they are still FF games. Once you get through all the dialog there's a game underneath. FF 13 needed more exploration and less plot.

Yeah, 13 takes awhile to open up on the exploration aspect. I'm in like chapter 11 now and it's letting me do quite a bit of exploring but that took awhile to get to. I'm not sure how many of these Ceith missions there are but I've knocked off about 30 of them so far. Going to try and get them aal before I progress the game forward.

Plus, riding my chocobo is fun.

Could you post in bigger font?

I can't see that well enough to read it.

My favorite Final Fantasy was and is Tactics. However I like them through part VI and found VIII to be fun. The rest I could take or leave and I have cooled on the series since they became more story than game.

I also prefer the American RPGs over the later Japanese RPGs since they have all turned into interactive stories with the same generic characters and plot.

There are 65 Ceith missions, I think. You cannot actually take most of them on until after you finish the game which unlock your final Crystarium. On a pleasant note, the final boss fights are jokingly easy and if you figure out how to slaughter those big freaking turtles you will power-level incredibly fast.

Some of the bosses you fight in the Ceith missions are insanely tough, but still fun to take down.

Oh yeah, it was a blast! I'd never make it in another vid game. I always played Earl! Just the right speed. My ex (now deceased) took Toejam. Good memories with that mixed with a lot of bad I'm still trying to deal with.

Sorry about your ex, chief. Sounds like you miss her (or him) a lot.

I'm trying to see how far I can get in them without finishing the game first. So far I'm about half way through the titan challenges.
