Mutants and Masterminds 3E is official!
I usually hate edition changes, because they often aren't needed. However M&M has lots of areas that can be done better, simplified, and just made to be a much tighter rules system, so this one I look forward to, and will hopefully like what is done.
Another thing that leaves me hopeful is that the rules changes that are needed will likely effect only the rules heavy books, such as the core book and the Ultimate Powers books, most of my M&M library should still be largely valid.
Now if they go crazy and make it radically different I'll likely stick with 1E/2E and all of its warts and sores.
Wish I could be a play tester this time around as well.

Since its 20,000 I suggest "Captain Nemo" as his title. Beyond the obvious connection, he is one who sails on his own terms and ignores those he doesn't agree with...confident in his journey and goals.

I gave up on M&M after 1st edition but mainly because I couldnt get anyone excited about playing it. This was during our 3.xe burnout however, so any rules system that had X amount of crunch in it was kind of out the window.

The press release:
Green Ronin to Release Mutants & Masterinds Third Edition
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GREEN RONIN TO RELEASE MUTANTS & MASTERMINDS THIRD EDITION
Classic Superhero RPG Gets New Edition This Fall
May 12, 2010--SEATTLE, WA: Green Ronin Publishing announced today that it is releasing a new edition of its critically acclaimed Mutants & Masterminds roleplaying game in the fall.
"We've had five years of feedback from one of the most active fanbases in roleplaying gaming," said Green Ronin President Chris Pramas. "Once we knew we'd be doing the DC ADVENTURES game, it just made sense to take that feedback and use it create the next iteration of the game."
Mutants & Masterminds debuted in 2002 and was an instant hit. A second edition followed in 2005 and in the ensuing years Green Ronin has released over 25 support books for the game. The third edition builds on these releases and evolves the rules.
"Our goal has been to make Mutants & Masterminds an even better game," said lead designer Steve Kenson. "We worked to simplify some elements of the system and fix known issues, while retaining the flexibility and fast-paced play fans have enjoyed."
"Mutants & Masterminds third edition and DC ADVENTURES share a common rule set," added Pramas, "and books from one line are compatible with the other."
The action begins this fall with the release of the Mutants & Masterminds Hero's Handbook. This full color core rulebook contains all the rules needed to play the game. More information and previews about Mutants & Masterminds third edition will appear on www.greenronin.com and www.mutantsandmasterminds.com in the coming months.

Yeah, I have to admit I find that funny about myself, I hate 3E due to how badly burned out I became with all of the rules, etc... but with M&M the rules work well for the genre, so I don't have the issues I have with 3E D&D. Plus M&M doesn't push the "you MUST use all of the rules as written" etc... they push the idea that the GM is in control, and makes all of the decisions, because the GM is expected to be fair, consistent, and intelligent, rather than the abusive bully 3E seemed to brand DM's as.

I never bought M&M mostly because by the time it was out, I could care less for anything with a d20 logo and because I just didn't want to play a supers game (when RIFTS easily filled that role without being a supers game.) I might check it out, but I don't think I'd play it.

It's not a bad system but for me at least...it has no soul. We play it and have a ok time but.......it doesnt seem to atract any feelings. It just is kinda bland.
DC Heroes,Silver Age and even Marvel Supers also gets the job done but also comes across as actually SUPER in a better way.
At least for us.

Yeah, its weird, i never liked the old Marvel Supers or DC games, or even HERO, but for whatever reasons M&M does it for me. Even with just the thought of running 3E making me feel ill, M&M still does the trick for me.
I haven't tried BASH! though, so I may like that one.

I'm in the same vein as Ogre - M&M just didn't do it for me. It didn't give me the feeling of a supers game...I didn't feel very super. Not as I did with MSH or Heroes Unlimited (yeah, I said Heroes Unlimited ).
I have a feeling, just from Pramas' mention of DC and M&M sharing a rule set, that there are going to be big changes to the system. I feel that's why it's getting put out now - to iron out any of the rough spots before they apply it to the DC game.
I just might give M&M another chance, if they spruce up the system some.

I like M&M 2e. It was a bit complicated especially in character creation, but Hero Lab solved that rather quickly.
I'm a bit frustrated about this news though. I'm not interested in buying a new edition as I have a bunch of stuff for 2e as it and doing a 3rd edition I think, puts the DC stuff just out of reach. Best of luck to them though, Green Ronin does some great stuff and sure it will be great. Who knows maybe I'll even check out the core book or something done the line.
In the interim, I've still got my 2e stuff plus 4C, BASH, Heroes Unlimited and SAS.

I wouldn't start thinking most of the 2E/1E material won't be compatible with 3E just yet. I can see them changing things to the point where the core rule book would need to be replaced, but the terminology and rules would work fine with most of the expansion books, except maybe rules intensive books like Ultimate Powers.
If you read the section in the press release I posted above, yes they are doing changes, but maybe nothing so extensive as to invalidate most of the books.
So if they can do this to where only 2 to 5 books are largely invalidated, I'll jump on board. If they are going to be extensive enough to largely invalidate everything I'll stay with 2E.
Besides, I already have the fan made write ups of all the comic heroes, Marvel, DC, Vertigo, etc.... and they are great! So its not like I saw a need for the DC license in the first place.

Treebore,
I read some of the stuff over at the M&M Superlink, it sounds like their doing some streamlining of it. The core mechanic will remain d20 which is good. It's not so much that 1e/2e will be incompatible with 3e/DC. I'm sure they'll be a conversion document and all that. Besides the Mastermind Manual showed - if one didn't know it already - that's it's your game do what you want, and here are the mechanics for it.
My only issue is change. For good or bad, I've grown comfortable with M&M 2e and the idea of a 3e just makes me sigh. I just didn't get to play it enough and now it's 3e/DC. Sure I got it D&D has multiple editions, Heroes Unlimited has 2 editions, HERO is on its 6th incantation, GURPs is on its' 3rd or 4th. I guess I just wasn't that vested in 2e to see all it's problems. As they said in the press release they've got 5 years of feedback so likely things need to be worked on - maintenance if you will. That being said, a lot times with games, i'm more of a collector rather than a player and with 3e coming out, it means new stuff, but more of the same stuff coming out. Sure I don't have to buy it, but if I start in on it, I'll end up wanting to become a completest.
I guess in reflecting on it, I realized played a lot of D&D 1e/2e and never really saw or cared about the changes it was all basically D&D to me. It remained as we played it, there wasn't a whole lot of change. When I got back into it after several years, there was 3.5 and that was cool - but then change came which I just didn't embrace because I was just getting comfortable with 3.X. I'm not a hardcore play every few days RPGer and so again I don't see the flaws, I'm just enjoying it.
Perhaps that is why I'm comfortable with C&C. It really hasn't change in a complete overhaul way.
So i think in summary, announcing a 3e/DC for M&M really comes down to Change - oh no, that makes me uncomfortable, becuase I don't really know anything yet - oh no, that means no more 2e books - oh no if I buy 3e/DC I'm going to have to start all over again collecting, and I haven't played 2e enough to know why it needs a 3e!

I found M&M to be an interesting take on a Supers game which is built on the d20 system.
That said, I've been playing more and more of BASH Ultimate, and have to throw my support to a game like this because of its 'rules light' design and philosophy.
I'll be curious to see what kind of changes they bring to it in their 3rd edition incarnation of the game though...

Another edition? *sigh*
It was just last year I finally gave up 1eM&M.
(actually it may have been two years ago)
In all honesty I was mainly using 2e M&M as a 'background library' for my BASH game. They really helped me get a feel for a Supers game that GURPS just wasn't doing.
So I'm pretty happy that there will be a 3e M&M. But only in the sense that it will make all the 2e M&M books even cheaper for a gamer like me who is just looking for extra fluff for a BASH game.
