Trading in OSRIC and S&W for C&C

Post by Naleax »

After discovering the retro clones and giving them a shot i've decided to move to C&C.

I've had my C&C books for about 4 years now since forum users Joe and ThrorII turned me on to the game. I should probably have committed fully to C&C then. After four years of flirting with 3.5 and more recently OSRIC and Swords & Wizardry i see the error of my ways and am committing fully to C&C as my house rpg of choice.

Really Swords & Wizardry was the perfect game for beginners and my wife really digged the simplicity of the rules, but she is now ready for C&C and actually understands the game much better after her introduction with Swords & Wizardry.

I ran 3 sessions of 1EAD&D/OSRIC for my Friday night crew and while it was great to explore these rules again it's obvious that much has been improved since those glory days of the early 80's. Ascending AC is much better than descending AC and thos clunky segments in the initiative round just confuse. Granted i was so used to that in the 80's it didn't seem to matter. 1EAD&D/OSRIC is a great game but i have to admit much has been improved to streamline the game, especially with C&C which i view as a fusion of 1EAD&D and D&D 3.5.

I hope to be running and playing C&C for many years to come.

Gotta love it! I hope we're all running and playing C&C for many years to come. It's okay now, but it'd be so cool with a CKG at the table.

Pardon the not-so-subtle hint, Steve.

Yeah, I'll do one shots of S&W, or 1E/OSRIC, and I'll certainly buy their material, but its because its easy to use with C&C, but C&C remains my fav. It has that right balance of ease of use, universal application, and handles house ruling. I've come to accept its pretty much the perfect game system for me, especially after I add my house rules.

I hope you signed up for my C&C game at Random Con in Phoenix next month!

I am glad to hear the news.

Bottom line it really does not matter. I simply don't have time to seek out and play all these freaking different games.

But I have decided to hang up C&C for 4e...yeah...4E all the way for me baby.
There is only one game and 4E is it's name. All hail the one true game! We must all face toward the coast and bow.

Don't mind Joe, he's been hitting the sauce again
Naelex, I'm really, really, really glad to know we're going C&C. OSRIC was a fun exploration, but after running our game for nearly a year in C&C, I am dying to actually play it.

You'll find game prep and in-game rulings a breeze.

See ya Friday night!!! Off to the Crusades!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the Crusade!

I think one of the biggest kicks you'll get out CnC is that none of that OSRIC or d20 stuff is going to waste. All those monsters and adventures are all right there for your gaming enjoyment.

I'm a new fan too and those were pretty much my sentiments, I don't dread introducing new players to C&C so much either because it all makes sense (high rolls are good) a bit easier, it seems more intuitive than high for attack rolls, low for initiative, high for saves etc etc

As for ease of conversion with old editions I completely agree. I read through "The Rising Knight" and realised I could convert between it and 2e (my current/old system) on the fly, which basically means 1e and osric is in the same bracket for me.

Jeez BD...it's called a joke.

I have noticed there are folks that like to take the thread down roads that end up getting the thread locked...and they are deserving of more than a ban...but i am just teasing Naleax.

For the years that I have known him he has dallied in more game systems than I can shake a mancatcher at. Since meeting up with him and ThrorII, we have gone back and forth, up and down, just imagine one of these edition threads but practiced in real life.

Thru it all, I have just wanted to play C&C, then started designing my own system, for various reasons.

So after the 3 years it took for him to finally run a C&C game, I figured it most appropriate comment to say I am now going exclusively 4e.

Yeah baby! All pale in the shadow of my tabletop mmo baby...
Yeah BD...eat my tactically superior shorts!

I have got you flanked from above due to my batlike dragon wings baby!
And if you have plans of some sort of smart alecky responce full of vitriol...I will warn you now.

Better watch out...I'm about to power up!
Resistance is futile...

Luke...Luke...who's you daddy?

Why you are big Darth Daddy...you tall, dark and handsome you!

Oohhh...what a long light sabre you got there.

Do you plan to use that on lil ole me?
Sorry i'm just a bit jealous because I never got a personal welcome from Steve and i'm the one that turned these slack jaws onto C&C.

Besides, admit it...you've always imagined the Empire Strikes Back like that anyway.

or is it just me???

I'm wondering if the KFCs in his town were shut down and replaced by medicinal marijuana dispensaries.

Well, at least he could bounce on down there and pick some up. Watch out for the colonel though, he is a mean b*tch!

Then you will definitely want to play C&C as opposed to OSRIC/AD&D, as all of those subsystems and the descending armor class just gets even more confusing, beer after beer.

C&C: The RPG for Drunks.

Or The PBRPG?

I was actually thinking about this earlier whilst taking the dog for a walk, and I began wondering just what game would I use to introduce my son to gaming when he's old enough. And perhaps the system I choose will also determine "if he's old enough."

I planned on picking up a copy of S&W and try it out when he's five or six (he's two-and-a-half and he can already count to twenty, so....), but I really think that C&C would be perfect for that age. Also, the modularity of the system would allow me to throw in more and more complexity, to a point, if I feel that he's ready.

I could not imagine doing that with AD&D for a kid; maybe 10 to 12, but not anything in single digits.

I think I may be the only 4E advocate on the boards which is odd since I play LL pretty much to the exclusion of all other systems of late. Of the games mentioned by the OP I will agree that C&C is superior to S&W or Osric/AD&D but I have a sort of soft spot for the old B/E version of D&D and LL captures that completely.

I guess what I am saying is LL is not necessarily better rules wise than C&C but it does have the advantage of appealing to my nostalgia and that is a powerful thing.

Not by a mile, my friend.
I like C&C, 4E, AD&D 1/2, and 3rd Edition, to an extent.

Liking one doesn't mean disliking another.
