Okay fellers - been gaming since '83 but a newbie to C&C - in fact, so new I don't have any of the products...yet. So...if I were to only get FIVE products, which five should I get?

Thanks!

Do you mean which products other than the Players Handbook and Monsters & Treasure (which are the only books you need to play/CK the game)?

I'd say clarify for us if you want adventure modules or more setting type stuff to add goodies....

For adventures, I'd say get the Umbrage Saga box

for setting type stuff, get the Black Libram of Nartarus and maybe the other Haunted Highlands stuff

Folio, if you want a setting.

and everything from Brave Halfling.

Yes, include the PHB and M&T - which editions of those? The most recent - 4th?

If you want maximum bang for your buck, hedgeknight, this is my suggested list of 5 products to get:

1) Players Handbook

2) M&T

3) M&T of Aihrde

4) The upcoming CKG

5) Aihrde folio

(or if you already have your own setting):

5) Engineering Dungeons (for the by the book encounter tables if nothing else, but also good advice on dungeon creation)

And if I may, a product not by TLG that will help your game immensely:

Ultimate Toolbox (AEG)

Okay, what is the difference between M&T and M&T of Aihrde?

Does CKG stand for Castle Keeper Guide?

Sorry, I'm a true noob to this game system.

Hedgeknight -

If completely new I recommend the following:

1. 4th Print PHB

2. 3rd Print M&T (both of these most current printings)

3. Monsters & Treasure of Aihrde (outstanding regardless of setting you use)

After that I'd go one of 4 ways depending on what you are wanting to start with:

A. If you want SETTING, I recommend Aihrde setting quite a bit, so:

4. After Winter's Dark Folio: Aihrde Setting

5. Umbrage Saga (Box set)

B. If you want good starting mods without being overly setting specific:

4. U1 Shadows of the Halfling Hall by Mike Stewart

5. The Secret of Ronan Skerry by Michael Davis (C&C mod from Brave Halfling Publishing - www.bravehalflingpublishing.com)

C. If you like to CREATE your own material, setting, adventures etc.:

4. Engineering Dungeons by Robert Doyel

5. Either Castellan's Guide to Arms and Armor by Mike Stewart OR Towers of Adventure by Jim Ward (small box set, allows creation of various towers)

D. If you like darker, perhaps:

4. Black Libram of Nartarus by Casey Christofferson

5. DB 1 The Haunted Highlands (more in the series, but the 1st mod/mini-area-setting is excellent to start)

Those are some suggestions. Welcome to the Crusade!

Sorry, I'm a true noob to this game system.

Monsters & Treasure (now in 3rd print) is basic M&T for any and all settings, C&C game in general.

M&T of A presents monsters and treasure based on the setting of Aihrde, the After Winter's Dark, which is TLG's setting based a little less than a hundred years after and evil god-emperor has been thrown from the world after 1000 years of horror/rule - a world reborn but still laced with the evil leftovers of the horned god Unklar. M&T of A is built in that world, and includes demons and devils. It is easily used with any C&C however and so is great in addition even if you aren't using Aihrde.

CKG is the Castle Keepers Guide. This has been long in the cue - some years back it was mistakingly listed by a distributor on Amazon and a few places before it was really even in development which caused a bit of consternation. C&C doesn't NEED it - it is going to be a book of options and rules expansions on TOP of the game, but a lot of people don't see C&C as "complete" until the, somehow, mentally engrained view of "3 core books" is finished. The CKG should be finished this year, if not by the end of summer/early fall.

Hope that helps.

Sir Seskis, I really appreciate all your help! TLG currently has the Players Handbook and the M&T on sale, so I think I'll start with those and expand from there.

Thanks again!

Also hedgeknight, it is important to note that there are not different editions of the Castles & Crusades game, only a difference in printings. The different printings updated some errors errata, and the like. Yes, in the later printings there are some tweeks to the rules, but these are not different editions. Just for your information and because this is a common misconception.

For the absolute noob, get the latest printings of:

1.) C&C Players Handbook (this is currently in the 4th printing)

2.) C&C Monsters & Treasure (this is currently in the 3rd printing)

3.) C&C Monsters & Treasures of Aihrde - absolutely one of Troll Lord Games finest products. Well written, and extremely unique for a monster book.

4.) Umbrage Saga box set - if you want a setting specific box set of modules, you absolutely cannot go wrong with Umbrage Saga box set. For $19.99 you'll not find a better adventure product produced, perhaps ever. Ultimate bang for your buck item in the Umbrage Saga, but it is somewhat setting specific.

5.) This is a tough spot to pick from. Do you want setting stuff, or do you want more game accessory type stuff? For setting stuff go with the After Winter's Dark setting folio (the official setting for the default world of Troll Lord Games) or go with the Engineering Dungeons supplement for non-setting, dungeon building goodness.

The CKG does stand for Castles Keeper's Guide. This book is not available yet, but will be relatively soon. Do not expect this book to be like the Dungeon Master's Guide of old. TLG has gone their own route with this book. While I'm sure it will contain some of same types of things that the Dungeons Master's Guide did, there will be lots of optional stuff you can add to your C&C game with the CKG.

Actually, you can save money if you purchase the C&C flipbook, assuming it is still available -- this would be a combined PHB / M&T in one softcover printing, both halves being the latest of the line (that is, the PHB section is 4th print and the M&T section is 3rd.) That would free up one slot, too, since you'd get both books in one product.

Seskis and Omote covered it for me, but yeah, all you need is the M&T and PHB. The CKG is imminent, so maybe save a slot for that but I highly recommend the M&T of Aihrde because the new stuff in there is plug and play with any and all C&C games.

Plus - the Mogrl. Most bad-assed monster since the beholder.

And you don't have to worry about canon getting in the way of your changes since even Steve only remembers something about roughly 10% of his own campaign world.

Thanks a lot fellers! I went to the TLG store earlier today and dropped about 35 bucks - got the Player's Handbook, Monsters & Treasures, and Aihdre: After Winter's Dark Folio for 10 bucks each and U1 Shadows of the Halfling Hall for 5 bucks!

I figure that will get me started and then I can add on from there. Again, thanks so much for all of the input and Omote...I apologize for the

Codex of Aihrde

Best Adventure: Shadows of the 1/2 Hall

My All Time Favorite: Gary Gygax's Living Fantasy
