This reminds me an anecdote that was interesting to me, so I'll pass it along to all of you.
I was talking with Kim Eastland once about the X-Men book he wrote for Marvel Super Heroes (basically statting out all of the mutants in the X-Men series). He had to buy and read copies of every issue of X-Men as prep. In the end, he spent more collecting the comics than he earned for writing the accessory!
