Need help in naming a planet

Post by mordrene »

I am creating a starsiege campaign where earth is destroyed and humans have relocated to a new homeworld. I cannot, for whatever reason, come up with the name of this planet. The humans will rename this planet to its "official name" but will be nicknamed "Home." The history will be as the colony ships arrived their greeting from space command would be concluded with "welcome home". Soon everyone will call it Home.

However, with the new human government settling in, an official name will be chosen. And this is where im stuck. I dont want anything like Earth 2 of Terra 2 or something stupid like Pandora. So, I am asking for help. Does anyone have any suggestions?

The name Earth comes from the Indo-European base 'er,' which produced the Germanic noun 'ertho,' and ultimately German 'erde,' Dutch 'aarde,' Danish and Swedish 'jord,' and English 'earth.' Related forms include Greek 'eraze,' meaning 'on the ground,' and Welsh 'erw,' meaning 'field.'

You could go with the name of a Roman or Greek God, which would fall in line with the names of the rest of the planets in our solar system. You could also come up with something fantastic (in a fantasy sense ) like Secundus Prime (which would make sense since this is the secondary earth but now the prime location of the human race... it's also quite 40k-ish which makes me happy).

This sounds like a job for the Extraordinary Book of Names!

Third World. See, there was Earth, and the Moon, and now this place. I assume whatever made them leave Earth also prevented them from still using the Moon.

Definitely gives a new meaning to Third World Nations.

Well, are we looking for the IAU designation, or the familiar name? For example, the IAU designation for Earth is Sol III, and Luna would be Sol III A. A better example would be Polaris. The official name of Polaris is Alpha Ursae Minoris.

Sorry...went off on a tangent there. Use mythological names for planets, but try not to use Greek or Roman mythology for your names. Use another mythos instead.

I thought of hindu or sumerian names. I can come up with an IAU name like 82 eridani IV (Kormorand for the 2300ad fans) I was looking for a name that was selected by a comittee type name.

Atrahasis? The noah like figure of a 4,000 year old Akkadian deluge epic.

He is warned of the flood by Enki the water god and escapes in a ship and preserves life...

studying mythology in college, i learned every early society had the "flood" myth. go figure since they were all in river valleys.

Indeed. I'd grab one of them.

The symbolism is all there (escape by ship to preserve life)

Has a mythological basis like all cool planets,

And is suffenciently weird to pronounce that most people go "frak it, I'll call it home"

Off the top of my head:

Sanctuary (obvious choice)

or

Pyrrha/Deucallion (Deucallion was the Greek Noah, equivalent to Athrasis Pyrrha; his wife if you want a classical name appropriate for a refugee planet)

or

Ulysses (latin name for Odyseus, again appropriate classical name but fitting the latin names of the discovered planets)

I name all of my planets off of Pixies or Leonard Cohen song titles.

I recommend "Halelujah" or "Trompe Le Monde" or "Palace of the Brine"

I don't know, my players always like landing on the planet Debaser... plus: built in theme songs for planets!

Just name it "Planet Bob (New Earth)" and be done with it.

Watched it? Whenever I want to, since I own the DVD.

Actually quite a good movie. It was the marketing that caused it to flop in theaters.

im leaning on Tellus or Atrahasis. Tellus is the alternate name for earth in Latin and its the name of the colony the Chiggs attacked in the beginning space: above and beyond. However I like the idea of Atrahasis as a name that a committee would come up with.

I knew Tellus sounded familiar.
I thought the series was a lot better than the pilot.

When he said "Tellus" the first thing that came to mind was that he was naming the planet after a phone company.
(For those who may not know, Telus is one of Canada's cell phone companies.)

For your next trick; who shows nfl in Europe?

I've recently discovered that american football is actually really good, but finding it on tv is kinda hit and miss
