My first D&D (Red Box) game today.

Post by angelius »

It's only important because I got my (very different than me - those that read her articles will know what I mean!) wife to play. It must be all the articles/interviews she's done for Big Iron Vault that got her curious enough to sit down and play.

I hope it goes well, D&D seems to have a lot of exceptions and I've already made up some house rules for this game.

ie. Converting stats to a bell curve (%) and using that to calculate success in a skill/feat.

Anyways wish me luck! I'll post the summary here once it's done!

Skills feats?

I know I made my grown wife cry like a baby when I tried to get her to play 3.x with skills & feat.

My suggestion...

Simple simple simple.

Not sure what game your going to play but a rules light may be preferable. I figured if I spent hours upon hou8rs of my time reading and rereading complicated rules just to learn how to play a class i have played for decades, then she could figure out how to play a ranger the same way.

My wife is smarter than average, and after so many screaming matches and frustrating episodes with the rules, we switched to C&C and a new rules lite game I made at home.

Whew...no more adults in tears!

Now we enjoy hours upon hours of shared gaming time.
just don't bring her fishing...you'll never get man time again!

if you want simple DnD try the original red box dnd (the ones from the 80's), plays well and very simple.

Hey guys, finished the first game from the Red Box today. It went really well and everyone had fun but I now remember why we moved away from THAC0.

Certainly overcomplicated and unnecessary! I was actually amazed that the Basic sets wheren't as simple as I remembered them to be.

After playing for a few hours - it really dawned on me that Castles and Crusades is definitely the IT game when it comes to a simple, story based system.

As much nostalgia I have with the Red/Blue/Green sets I think that I'm going to return to my own system World of Lykarnia for my home campaigns. (Although for a while I had the "chef" syndrome, where I didn't want to eat what I cooked if you know what I mean.)

Is that a philosophical question? Or a literal question?
Big Iron Vault is the name of my publishing company which pumps out a quarterly "gaming lifestyle" magazine called Big Iron Vault. We investigate gamers and their obsessions.

We've talked about things over our last 5 issues about things like this and more ....

Women in gaming with Shelly Mazzanoble, gaming from a girl's perspective, the gaming closet, LARP, building cool game rooms, fraternized with Ed Greenwood, harassed Monte Cook and even chatted with "guitar heroes" like Herman Li from Dragonforce.

I to run a solo game every Wednesday night for my wife. We started out using Swords & Wizardry and she loved how simple the rules were compared to other games we have tried to play. She didn't feel overwhelmed and quickly memorized the rules that affected her cleric character.

Not long ago we switched to C&C and gave it a go. Were still playing C&C but it's clear that she is confused, especially with saving throws and the siege system. Shes learning the rules slowly. I like C&C but for totally new players i recommend Swords & Wizardry as an introduction to the genre.
